Stout, by co-founder Meghan Babin, is a cozy beanie sporting handsome cables, a deep foldover brim, and an optional tubular cast on for a polished look. This beanie is a companion piece to Porter, which features the same cables and is meant to function as a “swatch cap” for Porter or as a stand alone hat that is ready to wear throughout the year.

Yarn:   Hudson + West Co. Forge (70% U.S. Merino / 30% U.S. Corriedale; 235 yds [214 m]; 3.5 oz. [100g]): juniper (green), 1 skein.

Sizes:
One Size; 17” / 43 cm finished circumference; 9” / 23 cm finished height, brim folded; 11.25” / 28.5 cm finished height, brim unfolded. Stretches to fit a 20-23” / 51-58.5 cm head circumference.

Needles: 
Size A (for hat body): US 7 / 4.5 mm: 16” / 41 cm circ needle and 1 set of DPNs, or your preferred needle for small-circumference circular knitting.
Size B (for ribbing): US 5 / 3.75 mm: 16” / 41 cm circ needle, or your preferred needle for small-circumference circular knitting.
Size C (optional, for tubular cast on): US 4 / 3.5 mm: 16” / 41 cm circ needle, or your preferred needle for small-circumference circular knitting.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions:

Gauge: 
27 sts and 30 rnds = 4” / 10 cm in 2x2 Rib on Size B needle.
8.25” / 21 cm = 1 repeat of Chart B on Size A needle.

Meghan Babin (she/her) is the co-founder of Hudson + West Co. She’s the former editor of Interweave Knitsknit.wear, and creator and editor of Wool Studio. She hails from the lower Hudson Valley region of New York where she currently lives, designs, and runs H+W HQ East.
